Jesus described it as a place of pain and burning. In Revelation it ("the second death" as it is called) is described as a "lake of fire."
In Deuteronomy 32:22 it speaks of God being angry with some and mentions a "lowest hell [sheol]" and fire being there.
Matthew 5:22 describes how Jesus used the expression "hell fire" or gehenna of fire. The expression is also in Matthew 18:9 (see also Mark 9:43, 42-49, "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched"). Interestingly, gehenna was a garbage dump outside of town.
In James 3:6 it speaks of us letting our words, our "tongue" get us in danger of the fires of hell.
The biggie, though, is Revelation 20, start at about verse 14 about the lake of fire.
I'm not describing some artists rendition or common story, this is what the Bible describes, so if it doesn't fit your picture, take it up with the author.

Men in the Bible are said to be in hell, Sheol-Hadees, and in "The lowest hell," while on earth. Deut. 32: 22; Jon. 2: 2; Rev. 6: 8.
Men have been in Hell, Sheol-Hadees, and yet have escaped from it. Ps. 18: 5, 6; II Sam. ; Jon 2: 2; Ps. 116: 3; 86: 12-13. Ps. 30: 3; Rev. 20: 13.
God delivers men from Hell, Sheol-Hadees. I Sam. 2: 6.
All men are to go there. No one can escape the Bible Hell, Sheol-Hadees. Ps. 89: 48.
There can be no evil there for there is no kind of work there. Eccl. 9: 10.
Christ's soul was said to be in Hell, Sheol-Hadees. Acts 2: 27-28.
No one in the Bible ever speaks of Hell, Sheol-Hadees as a place of punishment after death.
It is a way of escape from punishment. Amos 9: 2.
The inhabitants of Hell, Sheol-Hadees are eaten of worms, vanish and are consumed away. Job 7: 9, 21; Ps. 49: 14.
Hell, Sheol-Hadees is a place of rest. Job 17: 16.
It is a realm of unconsciousness. Ps. 6: 5; Is. 38: 18; Eccl. 9: 10.
All men will be delivered from this Hell. Hos. 13: 14.
Hell, Sheol-Hadees, will be destroyed. Hos. 13: 14; I Cor. 15: 55; Rev. 20: 14.

Hell is a place where people go after death that isn't heaven. Those that don't go to heaven go either where the dead go with the dead, or the dead go in the sea, or the dead go in hell.
Hell was made for the devil & his messengers. So those people that do the devils work go to the dead in hell.
Hell is separation from God. I believe that the place God puts dead people with the dead is a place of rest until the Great White Throne Judgment Day. The ones in the sea may be those killed in the great flood.
Hell is described by Jesus who talked about the rich man & the poor man. The rich man abused the poor man on earth. The poor man suffered on earth but loved God. The rich man went to a place of no living water. He could see those in Abraham's bosom including the poor man who he abused on earth. He was in a certain amount of torment. He could hear, see, smell, feel & thirst. He was in death & hell.
There is also a place of outer darkness where there is gnashing of teath. This could be the jail house of the abyss. That is where Satan is going after Jesus returns.
I could find the verses & write them if you want. These are the things that come to mind.
Also, in the end, the dead of the dead, the dead of the sea and death & hell give up their dead. They are judged according to their works. Those found not written in the books of life are thrown into the lake of fire, (the second death). The beast, false prophet & satan are already in the lake of fire at this time. They will be tormented forever. Right now, no one is in the lake of fire.

The Bible is fairly brief on actual descriptions of a physical Hell: Dante's Inferno gives a much better picture. In Dante, Hell is in the center of the Earth, and the center of Hell is frozen, with the rationale that Hell is as far from God as possible, and the center of Hell is the point in the Universe most removed from the warmth of God's love.

It is the common grave of manknid. Job prayed to go there, Jonah was said to have prayed from the belly of Hell when he was inside the giant fish(whale) that swallowed him, in Revelation it says Hell will be emptied and thrown into the Lake of Fire, the second death. Since you literally can't throw Hell into anything and the Lake of Fire represents the second death and the word of God says that death will be no more, then that means that Hell will be no more as there will be no more dead to put in there.

Hell doesn't really exist in the Bible. "sheol" "hades" and "grave" do, but Hell doesn't. It's just a scare tactic.
