My ideal wait time would be about 12-18 months. However, my fiancee is a year younger than I am and has another year in college to go. By the time we get married, we'll have been engaged for 3 1/2 years! Ah well, at least it'll happen, which is the important part! :)

I think that the engagement period is supposed to be long enough to plan the wedding, so most people choose to have a 8-12 month engagement depending on availability of a location. Of course along with every other detail of wedding planning, it's whatever works for each couple.

It really depends on the couple what they want the engagement period to be. Some people think that it should only be long enough to plan the wedding, others insist on waiting over a year. Its all up to you and your fiance. Don't let other people pressure you into a quick marriage or a long waiting period if thats not what you want. Do what feels right.

I think a good amount of time is about a year. My husband and I were engaged for a year and half before we were married. But it's different for everyone! It usually takes a long time to plan a wedding, depending on the size, but a year is a good time frame to get all the plans in place. You generally want to give time to be able to pay for the wedding, and also to do any sort of engagement counseling that your religion, if any, requires. Also, sometimes venues that you want your wedding held at book up pretty fast, so you end up pushing the wedding back a bit. So give time for all of the unexpected!

You need to ask yourself that question. You need long enough make the arrangements. Also, you want to be sure you've had enough time to stick with your commitment.

Consider the couple who have been dating for 10 years. A year engagement is kind of silly. If you've been dating for a short time, a longer engagement might be the way to go.

Supposedly, the norm is 1 year. But you have to do whats right for you. Circumstances can change that, e.g my friend lost her dad and it was customary not to have any such joyous function for a year. Her engagement lasted a little over 2 years and she is now happily married. If you are are asking because your significant other is postponing setting a date or keeps changing the date then its a different issue.

Good Luck!!

Not long I hope. If you loved the person to get engaged, then why wait unless it's a money problem

Some people say 6-8 others more. What feels comfortable to you and your fiance should be the correct response.
