btw ...that question is grammatically incorrect.... should have been I'd like to have been a fly on the wall....might need that on an english test sometime.
but ...it means that they would have like to have been able to see what happened without anyone knowing they were there.....because...a fly can see what's going on...but not many people pay attention to him.

Because a fly could be sitting on a wall of a party, without anyone really noticing it...it could also be watching people cheat, slag off other people, or witness other equally "juicy" stuff. So when someone says "I'd like to have been a fly on the wall"...they mean, I'd like to have known what really went on inside that place!!

To be a "fly on the wall" means to be "an invisible witness to a private conversation". Flies on the walls of a room are not noticed by people in it, yet nothing in the room escapes the flies' notice.
Funniest line I ever heard was a BBC radio commentator who'd just watched a footballer score a particularly stunning goal, when he said "I'd love to be a fly on his shorts!" :D

Easy one really. Like to have been an unobserved observer. Like a fly on the wall, unnoticed but being able to watch and learn.

If I were a fly on the wall I would be unnoticed and privy to all kinds of private conversations. I could ease drop all I wanted to without being noticed.

It just means that they wish they could have seen or heard what was going on in the room without them being noticed. A fly is so small no one notices them. It would be a great way to eavesdrop!

They mean they'd have liked to be in the room at a certain occasion, unnoticed by the people there, to witness or overhear a certain event.

they mean that they would have liked to have been close to the situation without being noticed. most of the time people say that, meaning they wish they could have overheard or seen what was going on without being accused of "eavesdropping".
