Remember that your true friends that truly know you will not believe the rumors that are being started. If certain friends start to act standoffish, chances are that they're believing whatever rumors they may have heard, and aren't really your true friends. A true friend would come to you and say "I heard this about you, and I wanted you to hear it from me."

Know who your friends are tell your friends whats going on and keep them in check. Make sure they know your story. That way when come one is talking crap about you around them.. they can straighten it out. Good luck
