Compliments are genuine. People usually compliment you on an achievement, your personality, or something like that. Look for eye contact and a genuine smile. Flattery is usually more superficial.

If you're in a position of power at work or in a social setting then sometimes compliments can be fake. If someone gives you a compliment in a large group of people at an office meeting, then they are probably trying to score points with you or make themselves look like a team player. I think the comments are probably genuine when they are said to you when you're alone and usually the person will lower their voice a bit, like they're telling you a secret - so as not to embarrass you.

Flattery and a compliment are both great things, "they make you feel good". But if your wanting to know if they are flirting then that is determined by touch.
Compliments are usually linked to a task, Flattery is linked to who you are.

Well, even when someone gives you a genuine compliment ... that is still flattery. If you mean insincere flattery and a genuine compliment, then I think it would depend on the person giving you the compliment. :)

Usually flattery has a motive. They want you to do something for them, buy something from them or give something to them.
Compliments is unselfish because the person giving it to you is generous enough to make you feel good without any gains to them.

it depends on who's giving you the compliment. If it's a friend or someone you talk to every once in a while, it's usually geniune. If you dont know the person well, they could just be a brown noser

The person saying the words and the way they pronounce them sometimes helps find the difference, but I don't think it's always easy.

It comes from the person delivering it. If the person seems genuine, you can tell, unless s/he's a good actor.

Look into the person's eyes, they seldom lie. Unless of course they have an amazing poker face, but not many do.
