Book: the Gallaudet dictionary of ASL - it includes a dvd rom of the signs:
http://www.amazon.com/Gallaudet-Dictionary-American-Sign-Language/dp/1563682826/sr=8-1/qid=1160081968/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-0959583-9264944?ie=UTF8&s=books

but the best websites (which I use as reference to teach ASL classes):

A good site with large, descriptive drawings:

Good sites with alphabetized video clips:

handspeak.com is the best I have ever found. They have videos of many signs. They even have some signs from other sign languages around the world besides ASL. They used to be free, but I think they may have begun to charge a small fee.

The best book I have found is A Basic Course to American Sign Language. (Sometimes referred to as the ABC book). My wife is an interpreter, and also teaches sign language. This is the book both of us learned with, and the book she always uses to teach.

You really need to have a teacher, however. Some sign just can't be learned from a book. You must remember that ASL (American Sign Language) is a seperate language, not just signs for english words. It has its own grammar structure, and has other rules, as well. Many of these things are difficult to learn from a book.

By the way, he and she is denoted simply by pointing. You would never ask "What is" if you want to know a sign, you would ask "how sign (fingerspell word)?". Words like "is" are usually not signed at all.

Feel free to e-mail me. I might know a good teacher in your area, or might be able to get you in contact with other resources.

I easily have a extreme listening to loss in my proper ear and a profound listening to loss in my left. listening to aids help yet I count very much on lip reading. My father and mom did not opt for me to be restricted to speaking by skill of ASL so I discovered a thanks to talk by years of speech treatment. i recognize the alphabet and about 100 signs and indicators.
