about 200 a day, tight crunches

Crunches are not the answer. Planks! do planks. Doing crunches actually build out your abs, makes them thicker, making you appear bigger. Planks and pilates burn the fat off the top while toning the muscle underneath!
Check out a pilates class and try to laugh the next day!

It's all about quality, not quantity. Whatever amount you decide to do, make sure you are paying close attention to the muscles you are using. Don't do them fast either. Take your time. Focus on keeping good form.

first you need to make sure you are doing them right otherwise you will get nowhere but you should do them till the muscles in your stomach are hurting by the end of the set and if they hurt the next morning....that is a GOOD thing

They won't show much of an improvement unless you sort your eating habits and do plenty of cardio to burn excess fat, while doing your 200 or so sit-ups.
