God didn't do it. Natural forces did. Once the creator made the heavens, it was set in motion to find its own path. God does not interfere in our lives. That would negate the concept of free will. I also do not believe that God lets some die of a horrible disease. We are told to pray for the person to get better. Then, if the person gets better, people say "Praise God for answering our prayers." If the person doesn't get better, I hear "Well, it was God's will." But that seems to mean that God answers some prayers for the sick, but not others. I also find this quite convenient a way to place blame on someone other than the person. People get sick because they don't care for themselves properly. People get cancer or have heart trouble, not because God wrote that into their destiny. They smoked or drank or didn't exercise. God didn't cause this. Our choices do. We decide not to do what is best for our bodies. We pollute the earth. We ignore the suffering and struggles of others. We allow greed or hatred or prejudice to cause war. We do. We are responsible. Not God. God sits by and weeps for us, but doesn't interfere with our lives. Free will permeates every aspect of our lives. And that includes the free will to make a mistake and suffer the consequences. The boxer who thanks God for his victory also says it's God's will when he loses. It isn't God's will that we suffer or lose or worse. He gave us the tools to live happy, healthy productive lives. It is our own fault if we do otherwise. That is the responsibility of having free will.

Perhaps reading the story of Noahs Ark (Detailed) would answer the question. Documentation on this era was only through the Bible and other books like the Quran and the Jewish book of torah.
Hope that helps.
