My son has to dress up on friday for school as a character from a children's book. The thing is, I don't want to spend £20 on an outfit he'll only wear for one day, I haven't got much time and nor do I have a sewing machine! I'm totally stuck for ideas. Can you suggest anything? Thanks in advance :o)

Thanks for all of your suggestions so far. It can be any book, there's not a particular one. I like the Harry Potter idea but am a bit worried it will be done by half the class aswell!

Why do they do this to us poor parents??! Haha - that is a rhetorical question btw :o)

What about making a mask from a paper plate with a lolly stick stuck to the bottom? You could make it together and he could be the tiger, if he's quite young, from The Tiger Who Came To Tea, or the tiger from Jungle Book if he's a bit older. He could wear black and orange with it and you could add crepe paper stripes to it if you were feeling artistic. Or if he's a bit older, how about making a big peach together out of papier mache so that he can wear his own clothes and go as James And The Giant Peach? Or you could try looking at http://www.ivillage.co.uk/print/0,,541388,00.html for some other ideas for homemade costumes.

Go to a second hand or Salvation army store buy something that he might like to dress up as. Use glue to(fabric glue to make any changes you need. If you had an idea which character that could have helped me with suggestions. I even used a trash bag before for the California raisin character with tights and shades, won a prize.

I've got a great one for a girl...The Paper Bag Princess. For a boy, uhh, how about making a box into the tinman, or stuff straw into an old flannel shirt for the scarecrow(Wizard of Oz). You could roll a piece of construction paper into a nose for Pinnoccho. Green face paint and dark hooded coat/sweater for a troll. Robin Hood, he could make his own bow out of a stick and some twine.
A tophat with 10/6 and mismatched suit jacket & bowtie from secondhand or dollar store for the mad hatter(Alice in Wonderland) A flute for the Pied Piper, face paint and headband with a feather for indian in the cupboard, uhh , that's all I can think of right now, Good Luck!

I don't know what sort of children's book you are refering to but here's a few ideas:
1) say your kid is going as a cowboy or dracula; dress him in clothes that he normally wears and shop round Tesco or Asda for the remaining details. These supermarkets are usually very cheap during this time of year and shouldn't cost you more than £5 for the minor details.

2) say your kid needs to go as a tree, you will need dye that needs soaking and the kid can paint the branches for himself. (he is old enough to cut and paste stuff isn't he?)

3)say he is going as a sultan, dress him underneath in white (normal clothes), then go to a fabric shop and a art shop to buy the other things. If he needs a turban, use two strips of card to make a frame, stick it to a cap and lightly wrap indian fabric around the frame.

do you have a fancy looking vest?

If you can put together a white pair of warm up pants and a white sweatshirt, put the vest on over. Get rabbit ears and a tail and sew the tail to the back of the pants.

Put white makeup on him and draw some whiskers. He can be the White Rabbit from Alice In Wonderland.

Harry Potter - glasses and a scarf!

Doctor Who (there are over 400 doctor who novels) - hat and two scarves sewn together

Dracula - black clothes, £1 plastic fangs, make a cape from a scrap of red cloth.

Dress him in his regular clothes and accessorize with felt. Felt is inexpensive and you can glue it together (use a good craft glue or a glue gun). For a pirate, make a sword out of card board and aluminum foil and tie a bandanna around his head. use eyeliner to make a beard and mustache.

You can accessorize to make almost any character he decides to do. It will be a fun craft project for the two of you to do together.

you could always dress him as an orphan. My niece had an "Annie" theme at school . We used an old white t-shirt, putting lots of tea stains and eyeliner for dirt with a few tears. I used dark eyeshadow for her face and scrunched her hair to look notty and unbrushed. Use his oldest shoes for footwear. You could also get a few tips from the oliver movie. x
