they younger the better....and after about a year I wouldn't do it...they tend to heal better as pups and the ears look better if cropped early. Also, if you are not going to show the dog they really don't need done...

I am not sure that you really should have the ears cropped UNLESS you are planning to show the dog. Here's why...and I have included the links for the information I am providing below as well....ALSO...I have great danes, and I did not crop their ears...

Ear Cropping

Ear cropping is a painful, disfiguring process for dogs, it is a senseless surgery. Ear cropping and tail docking in dogs for cosmetic reasons are whether medically indicated nor of benefit to the patient. These procedures are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss, and infection.

For ear cropping, dogs or puppies are put under general anesthesia between the tender ages of 7-12 weeks old. Any general anesthesia always poses a risk, special for puppies.

2/3 of the earflap, including many nerve endings and acupuncture zones, are removed during ear cropping. The raw, bloody edges are then closed with stitches from the bottom to the tip of the ear. Many dog breeders will say that ear cropping does not hurt the puppy.
However, when a puppy cries out in pain, and bumps or scratches the ear, this is a sign of pain!
Ears are now cropped and stitches have been removed, now the puppy has to go through months of mandatory ear taping. In some cases, the ears may never stand and the dog could be subjected to a second ear cropping, at a much older age. For those dog owners that choose not to repeat a failed ear cropping, the dog is stuck with an ugly, cropped ear that flops either over the head or down the cheek.
There is NO proven medical benefit for ear cropping on dogs. There is no scientifically proof that it will cut down the risk of ear infections by increasing ventilation of the ear canal. Keeping the dog ears clean from dirt and debris is the job of every dog owner, it is basic dog grooming, regardless if the dog is cropped or un-cropped.

Most dog breeders practice ear cropping to successfully competing in the show ring. However, ears do not determine the quality of a dog. If a dog is good, he will have the same chance any other dog has. Natural eared dogs can -and do- win championships.

Ear cropping dogs will inhibit dogs interactions with other dogs. Dogs communicate with each other, using ears and tails, and ear cropping affects these communication signals. Ear placements and tail presence are as much a part of a dogs ability to react to each other as our languages to us.

well, if you really feel like you need to have this procedure done, consult the vet you would have to do the surgery. vets have different preferences as to the earliest and latest they will do the surgery. typically, the earlier the better. the vet i used to work for preferred 9 weeks for a boxer. how about saving the money you would spend on ear cropping and make sure you take the pup in for its regular booster shots, dewormings, and neuter, that is if you dont plan to breed. this is a strictly cosmetic surgery and guess what? people care about it a whole lot more than the dogs do!

Most vets want to crop ears at about 9 weeks and if they are over 12 most will not do it.

I agree that unless your going to put the dog in show you shouldn't crop the ears. Personally, I don't think it needs to be done at all! If your don't like the way the dog looks naturally than you should get a different dog, or not get a dog at all.

You shouldn't crop their ears. Their faces look much cuter with fluppy ears. It is rather inhuman, Plus if you are going to show them they accept boxers without cropped ears

I don't know but my brother has a boxer and she is cute enough she doesn't need to have her ears cropped. I think cropping dogs ears is mean!!

You need to do it before 6 months - but they are cute without being cropped.

Unless you plan to show the dog in a confirmation ring, please consider not cropping his ears. It is very painful and cruel. In England and other places overseas it is illegal. Wish it were the case here.

How old is your puppy? did you know that ear cropping is painful? and why do you want it done for?
