More likely, between the plague, the feudal system, and the Crusades, the general population was having enough trouble ensuring the survival of the next generation without also trying to improve the system of crop rotation.

Why are you trying to answer your own question?
The Middle Ages was a time of many discoveries, and progress in science, medicine, diplomacy, art, literature and many other fields. The science of architecture took a great leap forward in tthe Middle Ages. Culture, exploration and travel advanced. Society began evolving from an strictly agrarian system to a social system. Schools and universities were being founded across Europe that would lead the world into the Renaissance.
History shows us that there was indeed progress during the Middle Ages.

I would not say no progress. Maybe slow progress. History is still history and the events that took place in the Middle Ages did have an effect on the future, today.

The middle ages were actually a time of rebuilding from the dark ages. The Roman church set civilzation back over 1000 years. If not for them, humans would already have colonized the galaxy - or destroyed ourselves.

You know what happened to people like Galileo and Copernicus, don't you. The inquisition.
If you lived back then, would you have the guts to let anyone know the Church didn't control every function of your brain? Think about it. That fire gets awful hot - and they burned em' slow back then.
