No, definitely Do Not give her water pills.

Her legs are swollen because of inflammation from the poison ivy (same as a bee sting or mosquito bite)....

You don't say how old she is....but Benadryl is helpful in calming it down. If you don't know what amount....call your Doctor, and they will probably answer you over the phone.

Sometimes you can get a secondary infection too....Rash forms blisters, itches and you scratch...introducing germs.

Wash frequently with mild soap and cool water. You can buy Caladryl lotion OTC...which helps to relieve itching/burning and dry this up, use cortisone cream 1%.

Poison Ivy causes an ALLERGIC reaction in many people, some mild and some worse....but it itches no matter what. It has to run it's course so it will be a few days.

If you have any doubts at all of what you should do, Please contact your Doctor as soon as possible.

I would call the doctor first to see if it was an emergency.

Poison Ivy On Leg

You'll have to go to the drug store for this... so not home remedy but it is the best thing I have found. I've tried about every remedy there is. It's called Iodex. It looks like axle grease but if you use it your poison ivy will be dead the next day. To use it though you have to break all of the rules: 1. scrape open the blisters and clean with soap and water. 2. dry off and quickly apply the Iodex then cover with gauze or a soft dry cloth so you won't wipe the Iodex off accidentally. The next morning you'll see that the poison ivy is dead. You'll probably have to ask the pharmacist to get it for you as it won't be out on a shelf or display. It's not prescription. Make sure you ask for the one that is for cuts and abrasions. @JenV: Thanks for that. Like you I have been covered from head to foot, many times. I will have to give your Neoxyn a try. This is the first I have heard of it.

I don't know if there are any home remedies, but I seem to get poison ivy bad enough every few years to have to go to the doctor. I usually wind up with a prescription for steroids.

they are swelling due to inflammation, diuretics (water pills) will not help, will probably harm the situation. Cold compresses, some benadryl, elevation will help. But if she has a lot of swelling the reaction to the poison ivy could become systemic, and she could go into shock. Woman, get the child to a doctor.

Aveeno sells oatmeal bath packets (you can get them at any pharmacy) which will help reduce the itch. But if the legs are really badly swollen, you may want to take her to the doctor because there are low-dose prescription steroids like Prednisone which will help reduce the swelling and deal with the allergic reaction.

get her on a steroid pack from the doctor, asap. it will shorten the duration and help witht he swelling.

in the meantime, try aveeno oatmeal bath powder.

I imagine you could make your own oatmeal powder by putting dry oatmeal in a blender and set it on a high setting til it is powder. I have never actually tried this, it just came to me.

I woudn't try water pills
