There is such a thing, as anyone can see for themselves when they tilt a glass of wine, and it is an indicator of theage of the wine.
It is called the meniscus

No such thing. You tilt the glass and return to base down to see the "legs". These are the rivulets of wine that cling to the inside edge of the glass. Not all wines have "legs". Good Bordeaux's that have reached their proper age for drinking will have good "legs". I think this what you mean.

The colour of the edge of a glass of wine is indicative of age, earthy brownish colours denotes mature wines. Purple, blue tints not quite. Pink or light reddish young wines. No idea what the line is called
