I had it as a kid. It is an awfully sweet candy made from almond paste. It is almost too sickeningly sweet and you can only eat a little bit of it because of that. But is festive as it is colorful and comes in the shapes usually of fruits and veggies.

Mmmmm, Santa always puts a large dark chocolate covered bar of marzipan in my stocking and I nibble away at it for ages. You can try it at any specialty chocolate shop.

The kind for putting on a cake is much finer / smoother (probably has more icing sugar in it) and available in the baking section of the grocery store especially around Christmas time for rolling and warpping the Christmas cake in.

I'm allergic to almonds but my grandma loves it. I found this recipe for you. Hope this helps.

Enjoy!

75 - 100 grams / 3 - 4 oz of ground almonds
1 cup of icing sugar
½ cup of castor sugar
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons of fresh strained lemon juice
½ teaspoon of almond essence
In a medium sized bowl or food processor mix together the ground almonds, icing sugar and castor sugar. Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the egg yolk, strained lemon juice and essence. Taste and add more essence if desired. Mix together thoroughly. Turn out onto the bench dusted with a mixture of icing sugar and cornflour and knead the mixture until smooth. Use as required.

Marzipan by itself is pretty sweet, but when mixed with other ingredients, or used as a filling, is super great! It is basically sweetened coarse-ground almond butter. I love it spread on a tart shell with fruit on top. Also good in cookies.

I love it too. It has an almond flavour. I would buy it at your bakery shop. It`s great for petit fours.
