I am on a low calorie diet with at least 45 minutes of cardio a day. I am trying to lose quite a bit of weight for a contest, but not so much that it is extremely unhealthy. I am already aware that helthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs. a week. I read something a minute ago about water fasting 2 to 3 days a week. Wouldn't that slow your metabolism considerably? Or does it stay the same after the water fast?

I think what I read about is a WATER ONLY fast...not a fast from water...sorry about the confusion!

First off it is good to drink lots of water while dieting. It helps flus out your system and keep you hydrated. Specially if you are exercises, you need to replace lost fluids. Not drinking water can lead to serious health risks.

I read this to assume that for 3 days a week you want to drink nothing but water. That too is a bad idea.

Metabolism is the act of digestion, if you don't eat there is nothing to digest. So metabolism slows down and so does your weight loss. Eating calories that are too low can cause health problems as well as diet problems. I know you more than likely won't vote this best answer because people hate hearing the truth, I know I did.

But I have lost 200 pounds and am trying to get rid of the last 30.

I lost more than 2 pounds a week but that is based on how big I was. The bigger you are the faster you lose.

Also I am not sure of your age but if you are under 18 your body is still growing

1200 calories is the lowest that most MD recommend.

A fast once ever two weeks won't hurt. But the faster the weight goes off the faster is comes back on. You need to retrain your body to eat the same amount of calories a day and be consistent. No yo-yo dieting that is worse that just staying a few pounds over weight.

Not eating causes you destruction of muscle and organs which can cause permanent damage.

The contest is to keep it off in the long run!

DO NOT DO IT!
This WILL slow your metabolism. And then your body will start to gain weight a lot when you go back to eating.
Dont water fast. Instead do what you are doing now but drink only water. You are supposed to drink your weight cut in half in and converted to OZ water each day. I have found that if you drink 3/4 of your weight (converted into OZ) it really helps.
Make sure not to take in a lot of sugar or it will just counteract what you are doing (soda is the worst!)
Good luck.

Water is the most important drink you can ever get in your life, it detoxifies your system by taking out alot of toxins through your urine. Going on water diet means storing those toxins in the body which is not a very good idea. I am talking from experience because going on water diet could cause kidney troubles.

Here are some of my tips: 1. Drink plenty of water, 2-3 liters a day 2. Eat breakfast. 3. Cut down on carbs and sugars. For breakfast, try oatmeal with an egg. For snacks, eat yoghurt and nuts. Your lunch and dinner should be smaller than your breakfast. You can eat as many veggies as you like. Fruits are good too, but consume them in moderation because they contain sugar. For exercise, cardio is the most effective for losing weight. It takes 3500 calories to burn one pound of fat, so you would need to burn 1000 more calories than you eat to lose 2 pounds a week, more if you want to lose 3 pounds a week. Hope that helped!

Drinking water to excess is not good. you need the vitamins and minerals to keep healthy while dieting, so you should eat . drinking water everyday is good . as much as you want . but not fasting .when you do start eating after fasting you will eat more because your body is hungry . you need extra energy while dieting and exercising. so water fasting will not give you the extra strength..

Waterfasting may put you at risk. Do not attempt this without c onsulting a physician. I don't think he/she would recommend it.

Your body needs certain things to function properly. Take that away and it goes out of whack.

Don't know what kind of contest you are getting ready for, but you need to be in the best health and fitness that you can be.

Ck with your Doctor.....better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck.

Niacin may help you out.
There is Niacin and there is Flush free Niacin.
The difference is Niacin will make you feel like crap sometime after you take it. You get chills, feel sweaty, Generally feel like crap.
If you take a 325 mg asprin 30 minutes prior to taking regular Niacin. You should be alright. Based on my experience with it. I'd say you shouldn't suffer the common niacin effects.
Flush free niacin basically skips the step of having to take the asprin.
Niacin (B-3) s'posedly speed up the metabolism of the body.

if you choose to fast, do so on alternate days. If you fast for more than 24 hours your body goes into starvation mode and conserves fat.
