You're right, being a crime scene investigator is a real career. But the people on TV actually do three separate jobs: police detective, crime scene investigator, and forensic scientist. The detectives are the ones who do the interrogations and arrests. Crime scene investigators, who may be either civilians or police officers, document the crime scene and collect the evidence. Forensic scientists, who are usually civilians, analyze the evidence that is submitted and usually don't leave the lab.
The special units on TV are modeled on real-life special units but, like everything else on TV, they're way more glamorous than real life.

I have never seen a CSI, I have seen a CID (criminal investigation division). SVU sounds like it would be a task force to meet a certain problem that the police see a need to address. Both are law enforcement oriented, I have never seen one that is exclusive, police on these units still have to do other duties.

There are many specialized detective/special unit positions in law enforcement. For example the NYPD has many units at different levels such as Street Crime (mainly after guns and violent offenders) Auto Crime(self explanatory), SNEU(Street Narcotics Enforcement Unit, again self explanatory), and so forth and so on.

Yes, but the people who have those careers in real life are not nearly as good-looking as those on TV.
