I think in some cases the people are mentally disturbed and we don't see it in time to stop it. And also i believe it is that we see the news as it is happening. This kind of behavior and worse has been going on since the beginning of time we just didn't have immediate access as we do now. It is really tragic, and unfortunately it seems that our schools are going to have to be treated as prisons so we can keep our children safe inside of our schools so they can receive and education without being in fear of their lives.

Because schools are gun-free zones. As soon as you advertise that you are defenseless, then you are an easy target. Would you ever put a sign in your yard telling everyone that you have no alarm system and no weapons in the house?

Some sickos will always look for attention. What better way to get some than hurting innocent people - especially children? What better way to instill terror in people than threatening their children when they are out of their parent's sight?

There were school shootings before Columbine. They just didn't make national news all of the time. Now they do, so people think there are more of them.

It's a good question.

I think there are certain aspects of modern American society that exacerbate feelings of isolation and detachment in young people. The concept of 'community' has fallen by the wayside in many areas. Excessive permissiveness. Physically or emotionally unavailable parent(s). So many things that can combine into a fatal act.

I'm no psychologist - this is all just from my observations as a human, and my reflections upon the events.

I don't know but I wish I did. I have a child in school and it is horrible to even think of. It seems that they are starting to do the same things, like hold the girls and letting the boys go.
