Sugar is a very good preservative and sweets like butterscotch with high concentrations of sugar in them will never go off no matter how long they are kept in the sense that no harmful organisms will develop.. However butterscotch is an interesting sweet in that the crystalline structure will change, particularly if kept in a hot environment like the glove box of a car. It used to be a tradition of my family to have a supply of butterscotch in the car which was kept till 'stale' for the wonderful eating experience. It develops a lovely crispy texture and melt in the mouth sensation which puts fresh butterscotch to shame.

generally speaking, butterscotch can't go off because it is not an explosive. True, sugar can explode, given the right conditions - throw some on a fire and watch it go! I was once tricked into eating sodium bicarbonate under the pretext that it was sherbet ( which is very sugary ). My mouth did seem to explode but i live to tell the tale. If you hit butterscotch with a hammer it will certainly deconstruct with explosive tendencies. Try not to have it in your mouth when you try this ( unlike my wife! ). So there you have it. No

Hard candy has a LONG shelf life. As long as they weren't out in the sun and left where bugs could get them, you should be good to go.

Two months doesn't sound like it would go bad by then, especially for hard candy.

They should be fine, as long as they haven't been stored in your pocket and got covered in fluff!!
