It is as mentioned above, the brazilian national drink and distilled from sugarcane juice. It has a really strong taste so it is normally drunk in the form of a caiprinhna (which is Brazil's national cocktail-fun country Brazil). This is made by crushing quatered limes with one measure of cachaça with sugar to taste and ice with a pestle and mortor. This is an extra delicious drink on a hot day. You can also use different fruits with or in place of the lime-I've seen strawberry and kiwi in Brazil and pear in London.
This drink made with vodka is called a caprioska.
Enjoy!

Cachaça (pronounced ka SHA sa) (also called pinga, branquinha, caxaca, caxa or chacha) is the most popular distilled alcoholic beverage in Brazil, made from sugarcane juice. Cachaça is also called Brazilian Rum. The legal definition of cachaça says "cachaça is the product of the distillation of the fermented sugarcane juice, with alcohol strength between 38% and 51% by volume. Up to 6 gr per liter of sugar can be added".
