Satellite uses a satellite in orbit to send TV programming to your home. Satellite providers are a great way to go since the picture quality is the same coast to coast.
Cable TV also uses satellites to get the programming into a market (surprise, they do! ask them where they get their signal from) then uses local wires to distribute the programming to your neighborhood.
Go with DirecTV and you'll wonder why you ever considered cable TV.

The advent of 'digital' cable did change the whole situation.
These systems use MPEG-2 compression as used in DVDs and digital satellite systems to carry analog programming, all coupled with Dolby Digital sound for at least some of the programming.
In addition, Cable companies are offering a number of high definition programming packages as well.
Digital Satellite and Cable TV services are very similar in nature in that both make use of the same MPEG2 compression technology. Both offer hundreds of channels - including a good number of movie channels, pay-per-view movies, and a variety of Discovery Channels.
And like digital satellite, digital cable includes also a pretty friendly on-screen interface that lets you browse through listings, set reminder timers, and so on.
In to-days' world of digital satellite and digital cable services, it is no longer a straightforward issue to say that satellite is better than cable or vice-versa. In reality, these services need not be mutually exclusive, and both services support hundreds of channels.
It is all a question of what are your specific requirements - which company offers you the programming package most suitable for your needs at the right price - hence the need to keep an open mind when planning your requirements.

From what I have read, satellite has a better quality picture, but cable is more flexible. In other words, satellite goes out when the weather gets bad, or it won't work if you don't have a certain view of the sky. Cable has a lower resolution broadcast, so your high-def channels won't look a whole better on your new HDTV. Also, cable tends to more expensive, and your channel selection can be limited. Each one has its good and bad points; I would say try them both, then decide.

sattelite internet and sattelite tv is alot better!!! except sattelite internet is more expensive... equipment that is... about 400.oo. but the quality of the picture is breath taking and the speed of the satellite internet is faster than everyone thinks... the technology of the satellite is going to be around for many decades because this is the best thing to happen to cable and internet since it was invented.. you're better off getting the satellite tv/internet...

What the satellite people don't tell you is the "dropped Signal" screen that occurs during storms and bad weather. I have had several friends try dish and switch back.. they also don't tell you much about early termination fees or the fact that you have to take the dish down and send it back. I like dish in theory but in practice, all my friends had not great experiences with it.. Ask around..

satellite you have to have a receiver and a dish. cable you usually don't need anything but a cable cord. it depends, if the weather is bad or it's really windy it could mess up your satellite signal. with cable unless the electric goes out it is always on.
