I say that a good tip is 20% of the price of your meal. But my friends disagree and say 5% is the recomended tip. What say you?

Well as a former server I would have to say your friends must be d!ckheads for leaving a server only 5%! 20% is nice but always be generous to your server...they live on that money and they work their @sses off evryday!!

Who tips a hostess off of the bill? The only reason you tip them is to get preferred seating, once they've done that, your done. Anywhere from 20-100 bucks depending on how quickly you want to sit down.

If it's the waitress: then 20% for great service. You tip the same as if it's a chain place. Your friends are cheap and need to learn how to cook or be resigned with eating out counter-serve places. If they can't afford the tip, then they can't afford the meal, it's that simple.

doubling the tax is for people that don't know how to figure out what 15% of the bill is.

I go by the quality of service. The hostess is usually a salaried employee and you don't tip her. The waitress/waiter is poorly paid and gets the tip.

To figure the tip mutiply the first digit by 2 and that amount in dollars will be 15%-20%.

Here is what I go by:
Poor service: 10% (first digit in dollars...$20 = $2 tip)
Average : 15%
Good service: 20% (first digit times 2 ...$20 = $4 tip)
Outstanding : 25%

Just add or subtract a dollar for the other amounts.

Just double the tax as a rule then adjust from there. Remember that the waiter or waitress isn't working any harder than some poor slob at a greasy spoon. Tip according to service not atmosphere.

standard tipping of a hostess is included in the tip you leave your wait staff. for instance, if you leave your server 10.00, chances are that 1% goes to host, 1% to bus 2-3% to bar staff. that leaves 9.50 for the server. I always consider the fact that servers share their tips, and up the ante for great service. now, if any of the other members of the staff were exceptional, say the hostess gets you a table immediately, i'd definitely slip her a tenner at least.

20-25% Depends on their service. I've tipped as low as 10%

Start at 15%, then tip more if the service was good.

my husband and i ALWAYS tip our waitress at least 20% unless the service was really crappy, then it's the standard 15%... you have some stingy friends with 5%... they're lucky if when they come back their food isn't spit in, that's just bunk!
