Steiner, in my opinion, make the best binoculars.
They are very well made and tough although pretty expensive.

I probably would not bring a pair of Steiner's with me on a Safari as I would be afraid they might get lost or be taken or perhaps be run over by a water buffalo.

I would probably go with a pair of Bushnell's as they are good but can be found for a good price as well. If they were lost or damaged on your trip you would not be too upset... but they would still allow you to see things up close.

I went on safari last Jan/Feb and purchased a $350 Nikkon 8/24 6.3" waterproof binoculars from REI. They were very knowledgeable - also had friends who told me to be sure to have powerful binoculars - but as it turned out, I really didn't need such an expensive pair as all the animals were very up close and personal! Really! Most of the time I didn't even need binocs.

But I was on a very expensive private tour plus there had been no measurable rain in 4 years, it was VERY hot and the animals were more apt to be out in the open and they were.

That's not to say you don't need them - you do - but maybe one that's not as powerful therefore cheaper. Then again, you never know what you will see and how close up animals will be.

So, it would depend on your budget - hope this helps. :)
