I think the picture of the dead pigeon was slightly irrelevant, but to answer the death question; I think that a 'life' cant fly away, so to speak, life is conscious experiences we had during this lifetime. I believe that what lives on is the soul yes, the things about that person/animal that made them totally unique from anyone else. I think that death is just a transition, such as birth was, and every transition is good or bad for different people.
Humans are selfish creatures, and when someone dies, we mostly feel bad for what WE have lost, that the person is no longer there for US. As you can see these are very self centred views of the people around those who have died. I think people are scared of death and think it a bad and painful experience as thats how it felt for them when somebody died, we never stop and think, what if death is actually good first hand?
I think that the restraints that hold us in this life, a physical body, emotions, human traits are the things that are shed when we leave and that the soul is free to fly and the restraints are finally released. I think this is why people who are dieing, right at the end, are very quiet and peaceful. They can feel the restraints and pressures of this life slip away, and this is a good thing.
So to your question, yes the soul flies away.

well, right first yer stop breathing then undertaker comes an' wraps you in a plastic bag and takes you t' funeral home.then put some make up on yer so yer don't look dead so the family can have a look at you and cry and stuff. after that they chuck you in a fire or down a big hole where t'worms'll eat ya! then all ye mates and family have a big p-i-s-s up! and everyone say how nice you were...even if you were a bit of a sod when alive!

Death is something we all have to face sooner or later. i think its all a big hype, every one wants to live forever! but no one knows what is on the other side of death an that is what scares people. just accept it let it happen when it happens. some one once said
" when death is smiling at you, all you can do is smile back"

First of all, huh?

But in answer to your question, death is what happens when you're no longer alive.
