Dogs do not understand English, They understand tones. You can say a word that is similiar to what you want and they will respond the exact same way. They are very good studies of body language too.

In your happy "come here" voice, say " you stupid mutt, I'm going to kill you if you get near me" and I will bet you dog comes to you wagging his or her tail in joy.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it. If you have multiple dogs, they all come when one is called because they can't tell if you are talking just to them. Dogs are VERY smart, but lack the specific section of the brain that deals with language.

Dogs can learn words easily. So can cats. it you say a word a few times and show the meaning of it, they understand. I used to say very quietly, do you want to go for a walk? As soon as my dog heard that, he was at the door, ready to go. When I asked my cat if wanted some shrimp, he used to climb up my leg with excitement. That was his favourite. That was without him seeing or smelling it. They are more clever than humans think. However, if you are telling your dog all your problems when you are out walking together, don't expect a sympathetic response. They are more interested in the smells on the next tree. PS. I think Ben's dog above is the winner though.

No, but they can learn to associate words/sounds with objects or actions. As in "are you hungry?" means you will feed them, "go for a walk?" means they get to go outside. "Get your ball" means you are going to play with them. They can learn up to 700 words/phrases.

They will learn these things in any language you use. I had a Rottweiler that I trained for Schutzhund obedience and I used only German commands. Therefore she ignored the same commands in English because she didn't have a clue as to what the words were.

They probably can't understand everything you say, but they understand certain commands and tones in your voice.
