How can I tell what kind of breed my long-haired cat is?

1. Ask your vet.
2. Post your cat's photograph and we will tell you.
3. Ask cat people.
4. Look at cat breed websites and see what matches.
5. Make up a breed name to impress your friends. ("Oh, Fluffy? She is a Northern Shedding HouseMonster:")

If all else fails, ask your cat.

It is probably a domestic long hair. Go to a bookstore and by the book published by the spca because it has pictures and talks about all the diffrent types of breeds of cats.

Look on the Cat Fanciers' Association website. They have 39 breeds there and gives the history, characteristics and personality of each breed listed.

most cats are not any specific type of breed, unless you got the cat from a breeder. Most cats are either Domestic Shorthairs (DSH) , Domestic Medium Hair (DMH), or Domestic Longhairs (DLH). Sounds like your cat is a DLH.

It may just be a long haired moggy. Did you get if from a kitten? If so unless you were exceedingly lucky you would normally have had to pay a couple of hundred pounds or more if it was a pedigree.
