I've seen basking sharks off the coast of Cornwall a few times, big (and bloody scary if you're swimming and see one) but harmless.

Depends how you define sharks. Do you want to include species like dogfish and bull huss?

Assuming you mean something that really looks like a shark in the public imagination, probably the most common is the tope, a small bottom dwelling shark, growing to no more than 40kg. It can be found all around the coast.

Next one is into the summer visitors. The Basking shark has already been mentioned. Blue shark are extremely common on the west coast. Rarer are Porbeagle shark, which can be found extremely close to shore, especially off rocky shorelines. It is a relative of the Great White, and could be confused for being a small specimen. The final two visitors that are rarely seen are the Mako and Thresher sharks.

After that one is into deeper water: Six Gilled and Bramble (or Sleeper) sharks are known to live in western and northern waters but I don't think these species ever come to the surface.

Other beasties that may have turned up are vagrants and cannot be counted as regular visitors.

Mostly Basking sharks I think but scarily enough, there have been sightings of Great Whites in the coastal waters of Cornwall.

There are many sharks living here, but they are all harmless. The only exceptions are the occasional ones, who have lost their way.

They are being recorded by the "British Marine Life
Study Society", who are keeping an on-line log: Over 21 species of sharks and an extra 12 species of Skates and Rays have been reported over the last years.

You can find the reports in this website, if you are interested:

Mako, porbeagle, blue, occasional basking sharks.

I guess you don't wish to include tope, dogfish and suchlike into the list.
