I dont know the origin of the word MUFTI, but it means to be out of uniform and dressed in civilian clothes.

Mufti is the term for any "out of uniform" clothes. I went to boarding school and anything other than our uniforms was also called mufti.
Don't know where it originated, though.

As far as i know it is something to do with wearing half uniform and half Civvies i.e putting a civilian jacket over the uniform to go and do some personal business.
