to me it seems pointless...10 cylinders making less torque than a diesel, less horsepower than a v8, all while getting about 7-8 to the gallon. why did they make these? why do they continue to make them? why don't people just get diesels if it's power they're looking for?

The U.S. gov. wants better fuel mileage, and less emission.
The Ford V 10 gets half a mile better than 460 with less emission.
I agree with you, V 10 is worthless, 460 was a hell of a lot better

The real reason for the V-10 engine lies in emission control rules. The car companies cannot meet emission regulations with large displacement engines. With a big bored engine there is more unburned air/fuel. So, they decided that to make the bigger engine they need to reduce the bore size and increase the number of cylinders. Yes, more cylinders usually will equate to smoother running, this was just a side benefit of the original problem. Also, I believe that the Ford and the Chrysler V-10 were based of their modular V-8 designs, which means they just added the two cylinders to an existing engine. By the way, GM has figured out how to meet emission standards with the Big Block Chevy, so go figure.

More power and better accelleration. The V10 engines make more horse power than the v8 engines, as I recall. The V10 and the diesel engines don't really compare since the diesel is a "working" engine ratrher than a performance focused engine.

your information is inaccurate. Diesels don't make much power at all, and a V10 would make more horsepower then a V8.

Oh dear, more misinformation about diesels. My Audi A6 does 146 mph and I get 40 miles per gallon and stunning acceleration. How? With a V6 twin turbo 2.7 litre diesel engine.

I wish you Americans would wake up about diesels... get to it!

Well I am not sure for these cars however when Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes make V-12 motors, it is because they are smoother. The more cylinders, the more evenly the force can be distributed.

Everyone was tired of the V8. They kept talking about the tomato juice of the same name and it was confusing to the engineers.
