With an estimated 2005 population of about 106.5 million, Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world.

Mexico is a racially and ethnically diverse country. Its three main ethnic groups are mestizos (mixed European and Amerindian), Amerindians, and Europeans. Mexicans of European descent, which make up about 15% of the population, are mostly Spanish descendants. There are also those of German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Polish, Russian, British, and Swedish descent. The remaining minority is largely comprised of Afro-Mexican, Middle Eastern, and East Asian people. A large Chinese community exists in Mexicali, Baja California and a historic small influx of Filipinos have come to Mexico since the late 16th century.

About 800,000 American expatriates live in Mexico as retirees or businessmen. Mexico is also home for many other Latin American emigrants, including most numerously Argentines — Mexico being home to the largest Argentine population outside of Argentina, an estimated 150,000 (excluding those born in Mexico) in 2005. [3] — Cubans, Brazilians, Chileans, other South and Central Americans. The PRI governments in power for most of the 20th century had a policy of granting asylum to fellow Latin Americans fleeing political persecution in their home countries. Large numbers of Chileans arrived in Mexico and nearby California, especially in the 1850's gold rush though California was annexed by the U.S. Over 100,000 Central American immigrants came legally in Mexico since the 1970's, while illegal entries hardly get passed through the southern border with Guatemala, mainly are destined for the United States.

Thanks! It drives me nuts when people insist in calling them a "race" or saying that people who don't like them are "racists."

No one is justifying illegal anything! I am not for anything illegal! The asker is just trying to point out the error in calling Mexicans a race when they are as white as many of us are. Further, not all Mexicans who are in the United States are illegals. Many of them are here legally. Additionally, not all illegals in the States are Mexicans. There are many other illegals in the country and those ignorant people who insist that all illegals are Mexicans take the focus from all illegals and some of them might be here to do greater harm than you have the imagination for.

As for why they call themselves "Mexicans," it is because the indigenous people called the country something that the Spaniards understood as "Mexico." They didn't "adopt" or "take" the name from any thing else.

That is just completely 100% false.

I suppose it might have been close to the truth about 50-60 years ago, however if you study the government census figures, only about 5% are of pure indigenous race (maybe) and only about 5% pure immigrant race. The rest of the 90% are no longer refereed to as "mestizos" and haven't been for over 30-40 years, (except by foreigners, especially gringos who appear absolutely obsessed with race and racism)

Mexicans today are a unique race of peoples who have blended into a single unified new race of Americans whose official name is "Mexicans." You just save all that racist blather and fooferall for YOUR country, we don't want any of it down here... (nor your child pornography, your drug addictions and addicts, your family violence, your selfish egotism, your street gangs, the crap you call "music," your atheist-dominated educational system, etc, etc,...........)

That's the fact - Mexican is NOT a race.

It's the left-wing racists trying to turn illegal immigrants into a political force that try to unite them as a 'race' just as the NAZI party (Socialist Workers Party) did with the 'Aryans'.

At my local May 1 rally, the first speaker said that whites remaining in the new nation of Aztlan to serve their brown masters could be called 'Whitesicans'. I was shocked - especially at the fact that no News station aired that!
