Atheism is simply one who has no (the "a" prefix negates what follows) god (theos). This would apply whether moslem, Jewish, or Christian or Hindu or whatever. To some, however, as some Buddhists or Shinto-type animists. there are spirits and a spirit world with which we must deal at some point, but they sometimes have no deity, no god--but this is different. Most atheists are atheists because they do not believe in a spiritual world, the natural world is all there is to almost everyone who uses that label.

Yes! Atheist worship themselves. I believe that atheist caused more confusion to what atheism means even to some of those who follow it.

It used to be; when people used the word atheist for name-calling.
Now that Atheists are self-professed, it means they don't believe in deities. Any deity.

Sometimes I suppose it is directed toward a particular God. Many people do not explore the God pantheon so they can't, for example, be an atheist against Vishnu. They don't know about Vishnu.

Zero cool's answer is not completely silly...

If Atheist in its root means "no belief in God" then no, that answer was incorrect. I think what they were trying to say was that all people at some level disbelieve in multiple dieties, Show me someone who worships Loki, or Zeus, or Neptune, or Aries, or, well you get the picture. At some level all people exercise the ideals of the Atheist, just not when it comes to their own diety.

She has a very good point, but I think to be atheist, you cannot believe in any god(s) at all. It could all be in the interpretation, though. One definition is to deny existence of god(s), so Christians would fit there. Is there another term for simply denying the existence of any god but your own? (Other than religion ; )

No, it's not "directed" at anyone. There are varying definitions, but basically an atheist is anyone who doesn't share the opinion that there are invisible people with supernatural powers.

No, atheists don't believe in any God or Goddess or deity whatsoever. Some don't even believe in a soul.
