Jacob wrestled with God as described in Genesis 32 v. 24-30 as an indication that certain issues of his life were being addressed and dealt with. There are times when the Holy Spirit strives with believers in order to deal with things within them which are wrong, to convict them of sin and of their need to turn to God. The following link is an excellent sermon on the subject preached by Charles Finney on 15 December 1850 which gives the answer to your question.http://www.gospeltruth.net/1849-51Penny_Pulpit/501215pp_spirit_ceasing.htm. However, if you are asking what it means to me, rather than what it means generally, I understand it to be a facet of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (the unforgivable sin), which is a hardening and desensitising of the heart to such an extent that God is utterly excluded and so no longer pricks the conscience of the person concerned.

Cookie777, If you don't listen to the gentle prompting from your heart,it will cease and leave you to plumb the dephts. I sought GOD with purity of heart,on fire in spirit,I could not contain all the information i was given, the old bottle could not hold the new wine. GOD tested me several times to find what level i could live up to,then let me grow spiritually from there. seeking truth, seeking God opens up access to GOD,when you quit actively seeking the access closes. I find today i must have much more sensitivity to God than before because He is ever more beyond human sensitivity.

It means that either God is incapable of showing me the truth, is incapable of loving me as I am, or is willing to give up on me.

None of these things are the actions of an omnipotent or all-loving and all-just deity, so any deity who would say such a thing is a logical impossibility.

I would like to read this passage from the Bible itself:

But, just by my observation.... it means that if you're not listening (obeying) God's word by actually applying what it says, then God's holy spirit would not be upon you.

Hope this helps.

It means that God's figurative "strength" does not grow from nonbelievers. It's a great theory when considering omni-presence in religion (that is, all gods exist).

When you hear the voice of God but do not obey it then God will quit talking to you. A sad state to be in.

It means that religious believers have gone off in a huff because sensible people refuse to share their delusions.
