It would be more accurate to say that too many people suffer from illiteracy in general. People use words with no concept of what they mean, they use quotes with no understand of the historical context, cultural and literary references are lost on them, they are proud of being ignorant and clueless. Why would such people treat a religious book any differently than any other?

Yes, indeed!

If this forum is any indication, far too many ask what the Bible says about something, or ask where is such and such in the Bible, when it ISN'T in the Bible. And these people claim to be Christian!

And even more sadly, so many profess belief in non-biblical doctrines, and get all huffy if they are shown from the Bible they are wrong.

Atheists, of course, are worse, complaining that the Bible says something, when it doesn't, or very badly misquoting or misinterpreting a Scripture.

When I read your question, I reflected on the literacy of people in ages past. When general literacy was poor, Bible illiteracy was excusable; but in today's world, and in developed countries, literacy is relatively high (at least it used to be -- it seems to be declining), yet Bible literacy is deplorably low.

Everyone who attempts to self-interpret the Scriptures suffers from Scriptural illiteracy. That's why there are so many conflicting and outright contradictory beliefs among churches of human origin who call themselves Christian.

Yes, very true. People say "The bible says..." then there are 3 options:
1. They say something that isn't even remotely part of the bible.
2. They horribly misquote to the point of changing the whole meaning.
3. Or they take it out of context which also changes the meaning.

It's very sad.

I see people that are spiritually concerned, and aware that times are indeed bad.
But they have no comfort from the Bible, because they don't read it DAILY, if they read it any at all.

I like the way you put your question together.
Even some that try doesn't' know how to read the Bible, and will never get the understanding needed to receive the security it gives in these trying times.

You are absolutely correct, ... all one has to do is read the many posts made by the totally Biblically clueless here on this forum...to realize how true it is.

It is very obvious to those of us who know Scripture....it is almost laughable to hear people who say otherwise.

Now you know why it is important to obey the bible admonishion to:

"PREACH THE WORD, in season and out...reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and doctrine; for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine...but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers telling them what they WANT to hear...." (2Tim.4:2)

No, it would be more accurate to say that a lot of people today are blessed with a rational view of the world and don't follow religious mythology.

Based on my experiences, it sounds accurate to me.

Yes but it is their own fault for sitting in a church pew expecting to be taught. They should leave their false religions and seek out God on their own.
