I've been cutting for 7 years, and now I am at the point that I need stitches all the time, and I have even severed tendons. Sometimes I don't even have a real reason to cut, besides I feel I need to. I try to not cut, but I get to the point that I can't function until I give in. Has my cutting turned into an addiction, and if so, what should I do about it?

You need to go to rehab, just like any other addict. Addiction is just the way some people deal with life. When they can't handle things that happen to them, they drink, use drugs, stop eating, make themselves throw up, cut themselves, gamble, etc. Anything to get rid of the pain of life. That is what addiction is. A way to make the pain go away. And yet it doesn't work, does it?

It is definitely an addiction. Anything can become an addiction for certain people; some people just have addictive personalities. It sounds, though, like you have other issues that have led you to cut yourself. You should talk to a counselor or psychologist about your problem, and get some help. There are many people who do what you do, and you are not alone. You shouldn't have to feel like you need to hurt yourself, your days are probably consumed with thoughts of doing this and you can't have a happy, productive life while living like that. Talk to someone; you deserve to be happy.

Anything can become an addiction. Perhaps your body is dependant on the hormones released when you cut, or you've subconsciously become addicted to the ritual of it. The best thing to do is to find a good psychologist.

Really mate, it IS an addiction. A serious one. Its really not healthy to be doing that. I used to do it, but i literally did it just 3 times and i realised how stupid it was. you can lose so much blood, you can cut arteries, tendons, ligaments, muscles etc. Plus its a really emo thing to do. But i really suggest you stop, its the sort of thing people really judge you on. You should get psychiatric help. Please, for yourself.

like anything that gives a person some kind of temporary relief, it can become addictive. the way you describe your case you are a textbook case. but you cannot tell me that the guy who stitches you up all the time did not tell you this before, or that he didnt offer you therapy.

if not, go and see another doc, RIGHT NOW.

See a doctor-now. Or a schrink. It's confidential and you don't want to ruin your body that way. What will you tell your kids and future partners.... It sounds like an addiction and you need help asap

Of course this is an addition now, and I'm afraid you are in serious danger. You must go to a docotor and talk about this problem and hopefully get into a treatment center for this.

YOU ARE DEFINITELY ADDICTED TO CUTTING YOURSELF,AND YOU NEED TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. TALK TO A COUNSELOR OR A PSYCHOLOGIST, CUTTING YOURSELF IS NOT THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEMS. I WAS CUTTING MYSELF FOR A WHILE TOO AND ALL IT DOES IS MAKE SCARS AND MAKE YOUR ARMS LOOK UGLY. YOU NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND WORK ON THAT INSTEAD OF GRABBING A KNIFE. GOOD LUCK.
