We go camping quite often and take him with us. He's getting more and more unhappy when we go - but it's just the going and coming home. He's fine in the camper. We're just looking for something that will make him a little mellower while traveling.

If you contact you're vet, they may be able to help you. We bought from our vet a liquid called Anxiety. It is made from natural herbs and is not a drug. It calms down you're pet if they are going on car rides or if they are anxious in general. You can put it on their food or put in the mouth. It works great. I have found that some of my cats require a bit more than the other ones to make them calm. Remember, it is not a drug. It cost me about 15.00 a bottle. But you're vet will know what you are talking about.

If you are looking for some way of medicating him, I would certainly contact a vet; don't try to do it yourself, some medications are fatal to animals. Cats sense when you are going; the hustle/bustle, the suitcases out, the smell of clothes (like camping clothes smell outdoorsy, and if he is an indoors cat, he may be anxious about being outdoors, especially if he has been de-clawed. A lot of love, petting, and attention prior to, and in the camper will certainly help. The movement in the camper may make him jiggy; cats always land on four feet, and it must make him anxious to always be aware he may fall, so that may cause some anxiety. You may want to consider a cat carrier for him to travel in; it will provide safety for him during the ride in the camper should you get into an accident. Bring familiar toys, or buy new ones. Familiar scents, routines, etc., I think would help. A bedspread he's used to sleeping on, or whatever he's used to sleeping on, or, bring something in from the camper to the house, for him to get used to sleeping on, or adjust to for a week or so before you go camping, or as a permanent part of your house, may be the answer. Hope that helps.

About a half hour before you are ready go give him/her a catnip top. This will wined him/her up for a little while then the cat while be mellower for an hour or so.
My cat like it when I leave him loose in the car instead of being in a pet taxi and he brings a toy or blanket with him. Stopping and getting your cat a plain hamburger might help as well. That's how I tell my cat he is going for a car ride and now he will go get his toy or blanket. Of course this makes my two dog's mad for awhile because they did not get to go this time but they get over it.

I'd try catnip. Nothing works with mine, they are 8 years old, and still hate car rides. But some catnip might help mellow him out a little. Also (and I don't know how active your cat is) my cats prefer to NOT be in the carrier. So if he is tolerable loose, that might help.

He may not be used to the feeling of riding in the car and going on such long distances could scare him.

Take him to the car but don't go anywhere and then eventually when he is ok with that take a short drive around the block then take him home continue that until he is comfortable and then increase the driving distance.

The very best way to keep cats calm before car rides is to leave your cats at home.

The second best way to keep cats calm before car rides is to fill your home with yappy little weiner dogs. Your cat will be delighted to get in the car with you to escape.

The third best way to keep cats calm before car rides is to fill their cat carrier with live mice from the pet store. Just ignore the squeaking sounds. (Note: This is not very calming for the mice.)

We usually just let our cats drive ... that way their mind is on the road and we just sit in the backseat and enjoy the ride. You should be aware that -- in most states -- you will have to pay any speeding tickets that your cat gets while driving too fast. (And watch out ... cats tend to make erratic lane changes and to tailgate pickup trucks with dogs in the back.)
