All I can think to ask the Dr. during pre-op consultation is; "How long will hospital stay be?"

Please help me think of pertinent questions to ask.

Thank you in advance.

My son had his left one removed about a year ago. His hospital stay was 9 days, but that varies.

Ask if you will be in ICU and for how long? Ask about visitors in there.

Ask about what medications you will be on and for how long?

Ask about when you will be allowed to be up and walking? The quicker you can get moving the quicker you will go home.

Ask about if you will need, or possibly need a blood transfusion post surgery? My son had to have one and we were told this is common.

Ask about at home care for your incision site?

If this is for cancer, and you will be having chemo, make sure that they install your port at the same time. This will save you doing it later and then they will be able to use it for you IV's. Make sure that your surgeon writes on you file to use your port!

Ask about bathing after surgery. You may only be able to take a spit bath or shower for several days.

Ask if you will need to be under the care of a nephralogist (kidney doctor).

Ask what all will be removed. It may not be just the kidney.

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck!

I had severe kidney damage following an undetected infection when i was 18. I lost the use of my left kidney and partially the right. The right kidney meant itself eventually but the left died totally and was removed. You need to ask about life long affects to your life. i.e alcohol intake, diet? Also you need to ensure that you body can manage with one (most can and I am sure they would not be removing unless they had assessed you) without support with dialysis. It is your long term health you need to inquire about, how it may affect your life insurance and how to minimize getting a kidney or water infection in the future as it will make you feel dreadful.

Hope the op goes okay for you and I hope this is helpful. CJay

I was a dialysis tech for 2 years and saw many patients with just one kidney. You will most likely be on a special diet for a while. They need to watch your calcium and potassium intake....as well as a minimal fluid intake....probably just for your first few days in the hospital. Can i ask what is the reason for the removal?? is your other kidney functioning?

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

I've never had a kidney removed.

But thanks for asking.
