This has its roots a little deeper than the American South, and is thought by many to have come from William Shakespeare's play "The Baker Boy of Venice"; The character Banquito says, in the second act (as he and Partutito are fighting in the street for the honor of Lady Jane McTavish), "Forsooth, I see this is a turd I must o'erstep!", but unfortunately Partutito's rapid swordsmanship is too much for him, and he places his foot firmly in aforementioned turd, much to the amusement of all present.
