I am not sure why non-religious people become born again Christians. I have a coworker who is a born again. She was a lesbian and now rallies against gays.. go figure.. She used to be a very happy person, and something happened now she is bitter, hateful, and always depressed. She is very fearful of hell. I think for her it was the fear of hell. She must have been spiritual before she converted.
When Atheists convert their mentality shifts to a point where they can understand part of the meme Christians provide, I find that they then start to push rational thoughts out of their minds.
I did an experiment a few months ago to see exactly how someone could be religious. I subjected myself to going to church, praying, and not reading any articles on science.. I also refrained my self from rational thought. I felt as though I were living a lie so the experiment ultimately failed. I can not see how someone can undergo such a radical change in their minds.

The reason for religious conversion is always singular -- cognitive dissonance.
That is -- a person has a set of beliefs, a framework via which one perceives the universe. One then has an experience or receives knowledge that contradicts this initial set of beliefs. This sets up a powerful conflict in the mind, as no mind wishes to believe its information to be wrong.
The conflict continues until one finds a logical way to resolve the dissonance -- either the old information is incorrect, the new information is incorrect, or there is a deeper unifying infformation. In the first case, you have a feeling of conversion. In the second case, you have a feeling of deepening of belief. In the third case, you have a feeling of enlightenment.

Not quite sure what your point is, but I would say that religion, rather than being a blessing to us can sometimes get in the way of the full truth. There are so called "religious" Christians who are not really Christian at all because they have stopped short of declaring Jesus as their saviour, they do not have a real relationship with the Lord, ie not "born again".
There are also those who are born again but deny the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives perhaps because of a rigid adherence to religious tradition rather than the Bible.
In answer to the head of your question, non-religious people (by the drawing of the Holy Spirit) often receive the revelation of God's love more readily. Being unhindered by religious dogma, they can often cut more directly to the heart of the matter, a genuine and declared belief in Jesus.

Yes, bingo, thats why. They are troubled in this life. Because they have tried to "do it" on their own. THey find no fulfillment and life is just depressing. Born Again has had a negative connotation slapped on it, unfortunately. Its over and over in the bible, you must be born again. Its a spiritual "rebirth". People in all areas of belief can "turn over a new leaf" etc. and they are not labeled nuts or irrational, so why when someone embraces this major doctrine of the bible and find that it truly changes their lives for the better, do people automatically label them as "crazy". Have you ever actually listened to someone talk about what this truly has done for them, or do you just discount them immediately because you think you know what "born again" means. People who are Wiccan, Orthodox Jews, Muslim, whatever are admired for cleaving to their beliefs, but BORN AGAIN??? Are you nuts!! I don't know why people would pick on anyone who finds this true meaning in life and now has peace. They do it because it is TRULY life changing.

I have found that most of the people that I know personaly that have become born again christians, have done it because they are seeking answers but want someone to spoon feed them the answers. They have some guilt in their past that they are trying to cover up and by claiming to be born again it wipes the slate clean. Many do not know the real meaning to spirituality but become very good at regurgitating the sales pitch.

Because they want answers. There are so many questions about hell and damnation. Then you have the freaks who are convinced that the Bible says we are in our last days etc. My suggestion is to relax and have a Coke and watch television until some of this compulsive religion leaves your body LOL.

How God deals with those who honestly come to Him is differs with the individual. How he delt, and deals, with me is different than how he will respond to you, if you ever decide to honestly answer His call.
If you are truly interested I invite you to read my testimony... it is not that long... of my first day of The True Christian Faith. here is the direct link so you do not have to wade through my website to find it.

Because they are weak and fall prey to it. Having no religion is a sign of strength but religion weakens a person.

Because the Holy Spirit witnesses of truth whereever it is found. You've got to humble yourself first though. Whenever I hear folks denying God and Christ, all I hear is pride. Too bad - you'll be in for quite a shock come judgement day.
