I think that abortion is murder, pure and simple. What I find most appalling is the people scream Pro-choice, but what about the baby's choice? Do you think a baby would want to sacrifice itself so that a woman won't be inconvenienced? Sure, there reasons where it would seem that aborting a baby is necessary because the mother's life is at risk. My wife and I had this discussion early on that if she were to get pregnant and the life of the baby was a risk to hers, she would have to make that decision because I would not. But hey, I'm a guy, and that was an easy way out. But the fact of the matter is sadly never going to happen. My wife had to have a hysterectomy last year and now we will never be able to have any children of our own. We are planning to adopt. One of the reasons I am so adamantly against abortion other than the killing of innocent babies is because my wife and I so desparately want one for our own and there are many people out there in the world who are similar circumstances such as us. I believe God provided a balance between people who could have children and didn't want them and people who couldn't have them, but wanted them. I listened to an interview once about a woman who was aborted by her mother, but was late enough in the term where she survived. Talk about a miracle! Do you think she would have chose to die? I don't think so! She travels and talks to different groups proving the fact that everybody has a right to live

One last note: if aborting a baby isn't murder, then how come a man who killed a pregnant woman be put in jail for double homicide? Now tell me that isn't ironic!!

The issue is "at what point during the reproductive process is the offspring a living individual with its own rights?".

Clearly once the child is born it is alive and killing it would be an act of murder.
I think most people would readily agree that the sperm and eggs are not living human individuals (otherwise any man having a wet dream would be responsible for multiple murder and any woman failing to get pregnant likewise).
But what about between conception and birth?

If you accept that the baby is alive and has rights at the moment of birth, then it doesn't seem a huge step to accept that it does a few moments before birth. After all, from the baby's perspective, it is recognisably concious and able to react just as well before the moment of birth as afterwards. Killing it moments before birth would be just as painful/dreadful for the baby and take from it all its possible future happiness and relationships just as it would following birth.

Then we have a choice. Either we take a clear line and say that the unborn child has rights from the moment of conception or we draw some highly subjective line and say it has no rights for the first x weeks, and then it suddenly has rights. To me, the latter seems too close to "playing God".

Who are we to define the moment when an unborn child suddenly is treated as a human being with rights and when it is OK for us to deliberately end their life for our own reasons?

Where would that line of logic end? Would we also be able to define an age beyond which it is OK to bump off your granny because she is inconvenient and going a bit lame?

No - if human life is precious, then all human life has to be precious and we are not in a position to make judgement that some is and some isn't.

According to the bible, human life is so precious that we are not even allowed to take our own life if we think it has become unbearable (lets not get in to euthanasia, but there are much more cogent arguments there and yet the bible is clear on the subject).

To those who argue that rape victims and parents who have been told that their child has a severe disability should have the right to choose, I put this to them - your argument is just as strong ten minutes after the baby is born or a week or a month after. Is it OK to kill the child then?

Well abortion is very controversial issue in our world. You Law and Order SVU episodes about this and other t.v shows. Well personally I consider abortion as the taking of ones life even though its a feotus. While I was watching an episode of svu this girl was in a dilemma whether she should have her baby or not . She didn't want her child because her father would kick just like her sister so she decided to have an abortion so faced with decisions like this you never know what to do. Also what if you become pregnant due to rape. These are just some of the tough decision you have to a make.

I agree with abortion.

Sometimes mistakes happen and a child is concieved without intention. I think it is absolutely wrong to bring up a child that is unwanted and unloved and considered a burden.

However, abortion as a means of contraception is absolutely wrong.

I think that having unprotected sex that results in a baby is unresponsible and an abortion should not be seen as an easy solution.

But as I said before; if the child cannot be cared for or loved in any way then I think the mother should make a responsible decision and although she may destroy a life before it has begun this is better than destroying it after it it is here and can suffer.

My youngest sister had an abortion about 9 months ago.She is only 22,so that was the main reason for it.Her boyfriend's family are catholic, and as he wanted to keep the baby it caused them to split up at the time.

From a non-Christian viewpoint,I found the thought of it very upsetting, but I think women should still have the choice of abortion.

ok well abortion seems like a necessary EVIL. Rape victims and those who can't provide for their child have the RIGHT to have an abortion... because regardless of what the church says people were given the ability to make their own decision and the ability was given by God.

Now I think that most abortions are unnecessary and cruel! After the 1st trimester the baby developes a nervous system... meaning it can feel pain!!! Any abortion given past that time is torturing the poor lil guy!

Although it is regretable that some women get abortions, there are some who have no choice. For example, if the Mother's life is in danger. I believe in abortion if it is a health risk, however, abortion to save someone's sorry *** from an unwanted pregnancy is ridiculous. If you did't want to become pregnant, don't have sex or for the love of God, use protection and I'm not talking just condoms. Double up and use condoms and spermicide. Pregnancy IS preventable and it's unfortunate that innocent fetuses are disposed of like garbage because "Mommy" couldn't face the consequences of her actions.

I have no problem with it, providing it's done early in the pregnancy.

I don't feel that the foetus is a 'baby' until it's capable of life outside the womb. Abortion before that stage is fine, though contraception is obviously a far better solution.

I think it's interesting that abortion is still real taboo subject, even between women. Women together discuss the intimacies in all areas of their live. We talk about our experiences of sexual abuse, addictions, HIV, rascism etc. But never abortion. I know ever deep, dark corner of my freinds lives, except the box labelled 'Have you ever had an abortion?'.

The last big taboo in society.

As an open-minded Christian I support a woman's right to choose. My personal opinion is that if God hadn't wanted to allow women abortions then he wouldn't have allowed doctors to discover the medical way to abort a foetus. Yes, the Bible says thou shall not kill but it also says that if your brother dies you have to marry his wife and give her a child and I don't see that being enforced in many local churches!!!

For your essay you may want to research religious extremists in the US that bomb abortion clinics as it may be an interesting discussion point about their views on "Thou shall not kill" in relation to unborn children but their willingness to kill those that facilitate abortions. I always found this ironic!

You could also talk about the fact that some countries (I think Ireland is one of them) and some states in America still class abortion as illegal and tie this into the fact that despite supporting seperation of church and state some people still let the bible rule their lives.

to have an opinion on abortion whether pro or anti is one thing but to voice these opinions to a girl/woman going through this traumatic decision is not right there are many factors to consider in each case and as an outsider you cannot comprehend the thoughts going through their minds this is possibly one of the biggest decisions of a woman's life and one they will live with for the rest of their lives whether it is right or wrong is the decision of the woman concerned and whatever they decide they should be given counselling to help them through this traumatic time
