I saw a TV documentary about it on 60 minutes, Dateline, or Prime Time Live...one of those shows.

I did not see the documentary but I know many Amish seeings that I live by the largest Amish county in America. I have a hard time believing the documentary and feel that 60 minutes found a handful that have experienced this and made a mountain out of a molehill. The Amish live a very decent lifestyle and I have never seen a Amish women looking bruised or beaten yet I have seen many white women from the inner city with black eyes over the years.

I am not Amish but have a great respect for their lifestyle and I assure you that there are few cases of this.

Because the bible is very sexist, and people who take a more literal interpretation, like fundamentalists and puritanical groups, will have that point of view. Also, the Amish are resisting the changes in society and technology because they don't want to fall into a secular life style, so their attitudes about civil liberties are behind the times.

I did not know that the Amish do that to their wives. I feel bad for them. I have no idea as to why they do this, I have never met an amish person before or I would be able to tell you.

I did not know that. There are so many questions about hell and damnation. Then you have the freaks who are convinced that the Bible says we are in our last days etc. My suggestion is to relax and have a Coke and watch television until some of this compulsive religion leaves your body LOL.

I believe it stems from the idea that if one confesses and the community absolves them, then you have to forgive. here's a link about a similar situation.

High frequency compared to what other group? Unfortunately, domestic violence is found in every group in our society.
