After three years as a special I put my application into a force which at the last minute turned me down due to a caution I received when I was 12, doesn’t seem fair!

Its not fair , your good enough to do the job for nothing and did this come up when they vetted you for the p\t job.
I would write to the Chief Constable and ask him to intervene on your behalf i bet he or any coppers whiter than white.
good luck x

You would not be turned down due to a caution. It is something else and you should find out what it is. However, being a special does not mean you are capable of being a police officer. Furthermore, at the moment many forces are only recruiting the far cheaper and much inferior community officers (PCO's) so thats a possibility if you really want to - I wouldnt tho, if I were you!

There is something not quite right here,I am not a Special but can tell you there must be another reason you have been turned down for full time.
I would suggest you contact you Chief Superintendent and ask for the real reason for rejection, and get him to take into consideration the time you have spent as a Special, and you need to have a word with your Sergeant at the head of your shift who will know the full details as you are in his/her section.
Good luck and I hope you make it.

Its not so much you being a Special but because of the caution.

I would get in touch with the head of recruitment and the force's HQ to see how you are able to be a Special and not a regular.

I assumed the rules were the same

You're not the only one. I was turned down on medical grounds but the letter said I was okay to carry on as a special. Same job same criteria but they just didn't want to pay.
If it wasn't enough of an offence to stop you being a special then try appealing.
Best of luck

It does seem strange that something relatively minor is still having such a devastating effect on your life (I assume that it was relatively minor!).

I think you should ask why you are being refused and for some honest feedback on any assessments or interviews that you have had. They are obliged to tell you honestly how you fared in these and that may highlight some area that you could brush up on next time you apply.

who cares.... you cant trust a special like an old time copper
no other profession allows peoples with very minimal training to walk in and do their job free of charge resulting in the loss of opportunity to earn overtime.
i used to train specials and could never get over their arrogance..a special who attended every training session for 25yrs (fat chance) would still not have received as much training as a regular police officer receives in their initial training
