Yes, it is possible. Because "we" have successfully poisoned our food supply, Mercury poisoning is possible.
Methyl-mercury compounds have been listed under Proposition 65 as a chemical known to cause cancer since 1996, and methyl-mercury has been listed as a known reproductive toxin since 1987. Mercury and mercury compounds have been listed as known reproductive toxins since 1990.
Mercury poisoning can happen in people that eat a large amount of fish (like tuna) because mercury is in the water, all aquatic life have it in their systems as well. Because it is cumulative, the bigger predator fish like tuna have the most contamination. Mercury poisoning effects the nervous system, endocrine system, and can also cause cancer.
Keep in mind that tuna is just one predator fish, other large predators like king fish, shark, and still more are also contaminated.
There are lawsuits in the works because the big business has played down the risk, but the risk is still there.
This doesn't mean you can't eat tuna or any other fish at all anymore, but you should eat them only very moderately, and not at all if you're pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or nursing, because it (mercury) poses a much greater risk to developing fetal tissue.

Too much of anything can cause cancer. However the concern with tuna is its high mercury content, so if your a young person you should avoid mercury all the time, as an adult, fish with mercury a couple a times a month is about max ( adult systems flush little amounts of toxic metals over time).

It would take consuming a large quantity of tuna or any other fish, canned or otherwise. Most fish contains mercury and the mercury may cause cancer.

it does contain mercury which can cause cancer but it would be very, very difficult for you to get cancer from eating canned tuna in regular amounts. there really is no danger from it.

I've heard that one can of tuna a week is fine. It does have slightly higher mercury content than you'd like to see. Good Luck !

Heck, some claim the air we breathe can cause cancer.

Just enjoy your tuna salad, and don't worry too much. Make sure you buy "dolphin safe" brands, though ;-)
