I was nervous and excited the first time I was a white belt. I had a lot to learn and I felt it was taking forever, but that is part of training. You have to learn that nothing good comes easy and it takes time to develop your skills. After many years of study and a black belt, then the next time I started a new martial art and was a white belt again, I really didn't care about rank, I just was excited again to learn something new.

The first time around I learned a few things, thought I was cool and was proven wrong. Lesson learned. I was more patient and excited to learn the second time around in Kenpo Karate.

As far as Shaolin Monks, you can get the tape from the library or maybe a friend. Their demonstrations are impressive. Some folks will tell you they are not monks, they are paid government artists... others may say they are the real deal. They have some skills regardless.

I was 4 so I can't remember all that much but I'm sure I ran around juming on everyone trying to beat them up.

Shaolin monks are typically better trained than most Martial artistst. In fact they invented most of the styles out there today. They invented and trained in these styles as a means to protect themselfs and their monastaries from intruders. Now they do it as tradition and for health, meditation and inner peace or chi.
I wouldn't mess with them

I was totally confused and annoyed that I couldn't keep up with everyone else. I loved learning it, but felt totally stupid in class. It took til my next belt rank to feel better and every belt after that I feel more and more secure.
