I am flying out to Sydney from the UK in Novemeber where i will spend a week with my mum (who lives there). I then want to spend another 5 weeks travelling by myself up the coast before i have to go home. Can anybody recomend good places to go and to stay, particularly of the hippy/backpacker persuasion and on a budget.

The East Coast of Australia is designed for backpackers such as yourself as we have thousands upon thousands of tourists doing the same thing as you...

May I suggest that when you are in Sydney check out a good bookstore and ask for a book on that exact thing that you want..."how to backpack the East Coast of Australia"...they should be able to help you with something...or Lonley Planet guides are always good...

Make sure you check out...Byron Bay and Tweed Heads, Hervey Bay, you can see cyclone damaged north Queensland as well, Innisfail still looks pretty bad as well as the surrounding area (that is if you are interested in seeing what a catagory 5 cyclone can do)...

Have a great time when you are here and dont forget to make your way all the way north and check out Cairns, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation...

You will LOVE Byron Bay (North coast of NSW, close to Queensland border). Be sure to check out the Gold Coast while you're in the area.
