As an Englishman, and a Charlton fan, I agree with you about Danny McGrain. A formidable opponent who always went that extra mile when playing against England.
In those days Scotland could give England a real contest.
Players like Danny represented the TRIBE, in a way that imported players (though they are technically very good) never can. Years ago, Charlton v Birmingham (for example) would have been eleven SE Londoners against eleven Brummies. It's not like that anymore, so the passion can't be as intense. Arsenal often line up without any British players, players whose first language is French, Sad !

Celebrity culture has eaten its way into almost every facet of life, and because people need to have glamorous icons to worship, the clubs keep paying ridiculous salaries, and its turned into competing for which team has the biggest stars and most money.
I don't think football will ever quite be the same, we will see more abramovich-like transformations and football will be completely taken over by big business.
We'll all have to revolt and stop going to see the big teams and instead go to watch some amateurs playing at some high school ground, and enjoy the few moments of pure good ol football before the scouts come in and grab some players to take and turn into popstars.

no the game wont, unfortunatlty the game is now a rich mans playground. brought on by the OVERPAID players. but this is the true reallity now that only the rich clubs are successful, and following your team is no longer a hobby, but come saturday all this is forgotten, for 90 minutes you can forget all your own troubles escape from your own world and live in the dreams of others. either your in a crowd of 50 or 50 000 for that 90 mins we are all brothers and sister shouting for the same team to be part of something and to belong, wow what a feeling.

too many glory hunters supporting the old firm. These guys gotta support their local teams. There is life outside the premier league. If the smaller teams start getting money at the gates they will be able to progress young new talent which can only benfit the game

In all major sports people are overpaid so you must not like no major sports. wut u want is it to go how it was back in the day. how old are you anyways? teams like chelsea, manchsester, real, and barca are just as good to watch. it will never go back the way it was as long as money continue being an issue.

GOD YOU'RE BORING. TERRACES? THAT'S WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT FOOTBALL? HERE WAS ME THINKING YOU WENT FOR THE FOOTBALL, NOT THE TERRACES. THE TERRACES WERE VERY DANGEROUS, AND COULDN'T FIT AS MANY FANS.
I THINK THE GAME IS WELL MORE EXICITING THESE DAYS. NOT AS BORING
