Your choice is one or the other. Not both!

I know you’re looking for a quick response like “Blue Cross Blue Shield” or “Humana,” but it’s a little more complicated than that. First, the first answerer is right; good health insurance might be affordable but it won’t be cheap.

Second, different people define “good” in different ways when they talk about a health plan. For example, some people think a health plan is better if it includes coverage for routine doctor visits and relatively low copayments for other services while other people point to the quality of health care with a provide network or the freedom to choose what doctors and hospitals they visit.

Third, the health insurance with the lowest monthly premium might not be the least expensive. With deductibles and coinsurance and copays, it might be more expensive than a plan with a significantly higher monthly premium.

To me, it really comes down to what you can afford and what you expect from medical coverage. I also recommend starting with the health care providers you’d like to use and then choose the model of health insurance you’d want (HMO, PPO, POS, fee-for-service) and move on from there.

I’ve included a couple of links to articles that are a good introduction to shopping and selecting a health insurance policy.

I work for MostChoice.com, a Web site that provides free online pricing and policy information on hundreds of health plans. You can also get in touch with multiple local insurance representatives through the site – again at no charge and you’re never expected to purchase anything from anyone. Just review the online information, talk with the representatives, and decide which health plan best matches your lifestyle and budget.

You can find MostChoice here: http://www.mostchoice.com/health-insurance.cfm

Hope this helps,

I have yet to find good health insurance, and one of the biggest companies in the world employs me (in IT). I don't think such a thing exists any more.

It depends on where you live, but a lot of states now offer the same coverage Medicaid enrollees receive to lower income families or individuals with sliding fee scale.

I'm only familiar with insurances in NY, so the only suggestions I could offer would be region-specific.
