I would say in general, yes. The Psalms in the Bible have a definite poetic slant, and it's not a big jump from writing poetry to writing lyrics of hymns and songs. Poetry is often the search for meaning, which is similar to searching for meaning in life, which often leads to spiritual development. I have heard someone call poets prophets, because they often see what others do not. As far as having a definite religious slant, I would say only 10-20% of my poems have something identifiably religious about them. Most of my poetry actually has more references to color, beauty, and music. However, the combination of those elements can also lead to spiritual development as well.

If it is a natural flowing of the heart and feelings, yes I would say so. If is is written to communicate to others, especially if it is an expression of higher emotions, yes...
If it is written to communicate inner pain it is still spiritual, it's a call for spiritual healing...

If it's written to get you a good grade or be published it is practical..if it's written to get attention, it's ego in motion....

Yes very much so. I love and also hate poetry. It is very spiritual and personal to the writer and sometimes I am mystified to it's meaning.

i think so:

B. C.

The poets of our Savoir
flew straight to their death;
centurions cut off their wings.
They wrote about a man, His life,
while unheard tears fell by the side
and fixed our dreams to their gospels.

They recorded the pagan years of mankind,
an overstated senate that failed to comprehend,
then died in the ruins of a once great civilization;
while He showed His love they showed no mercy.

The devil dogs and suckled cats are the bosomed
bronze idols’ Rome teetered on pedestals, Rome
blindly worshiped day and night, night and day.

Larks of gender too innumerable, but repeated
in the cries of tortured souls for the lone Man
they cared to embrace; He erased their sins.

I do believe but do you believe in Jesus?
Before Christ, there was no such love,
for these few poets to gospel about:

It can be. Sometimes I wrote poetry as a self expression tool to get things off my mind, which in a way does cleanse the spirit.

Well, that depends if you're writing your feelings, or just some dirty limericks. Then again, I'm sure dirty limericks are spiritual for some people too, lol. =)

you are confusing spirituality with creativity. Not everyone who is a poet is religious and not all religious people are poets.
