I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant, and I get horrible migraines with blurred vision and flashing lights! I've brought it up to my doctor, and she just told me to take Tylenol and lay down in a dark room. The problem with that though, is I get them at work, and can't lay down in a dark room every time I get one! So, I was wondering if there are any other ways to alleviate them, like pressure points or anything else? Thanks!

I think pressure points are different for everyone. Mine are in my temples, my neck and my shoulders. When I have a migraine, I have someone rub my temples or give me a massage making sure that there is lots of pressure (if no one else is around then I will do it myself). The more pressure the better because once the pressure is released it almost feels as if some of the pain is released too.

Your work should let you lie down if you get these headaches, talk to a supervisor and bring a doctor's note if necessary. Is it possible to dim the lights if you can't get a dark room?

I also find that a hot shower helps to relieve some of the pain. Also try a cold pack on the area of the pain, preferably when you can lie down in a dark room.

If the pain gets real bad, see a neurologist. A lot of them deal specifically with headaches and will be able to help you further than a regular primary physician. You may be able to take something that is safe for the baby and relieves your pain.

I am sorry you are sufferring with these types of headaches while pregnant. The reason your doctor may have not prescriped any meds maybe for concern for the baby. The med I take expands the blood vessels in my brain to help alleviate the migraines. I know when I read the information that came with my meds it indicated pregnant women should not take it. Next time you are in to see the doctor ask her about the meds and side effects

So here is something that works for me when my migraines have not gotten really bad and or am at work and can't take my meds. My meds require I lay down for 2 hours after taking them because they cause dizziness. Don't say it don't say it. Yes I know I am dizzy enough lol

The pressure points I was taught is a little different than the one Gypsy was taught. Not better or worse just different. No I am not putting her or her suggestion down.
I was taught to wrap one hand around the thumb of the opposite hand with the wrapping hand being thumb down toward the palm or back of hand. Then with steady gentle pressure massage the thumb by the wrapping hand including the webbing between the thumb and the first finger. It should not be so much pressure or hard that it hurts. For me it is sometimes the left hand and sometimes the right hand. It can even vary from moment to moment or day to day.
Therr is also a place on you feet that will work but I don't remember exactly were it is.
You may want to go to library or bookstore to find a book on reflexology of hand or foot for additional information. Good Luck with the baby and I hope your migraines improve.

My grandma taught me to use the ones in my hands. Pinch the web part between your thumb and first finger. Kind of massage around at first until you find a small knot. Then push on that knot for several seconds. Repeat three or four times.

It always seemed to help me, but then again it might be because the pain in my hand after outweighed the pain in my head...but then again, it fades quickly and still the headache wasn't quite as bad as before.

The other thing is breathing exercises. Slow breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. At least to the count of ten each way. Hope that helps & congrats on the pregnancy.

"Ki" or "Chi" has never been observed or measured. None of the structures that Asian medicine specifies in the body exist. It's an attempt by primitive people to explain things that they did not understand, and it became part of Asian culture. "Pressure points"? Depends what you mean. There are points on the body where nerves pass close to bone and pressure on same or a blow can cause intense pain. We police use such all the time. "pain compliance techniques". However, as mysterious "points" that can cause unconsciousness if struck or manipulated.. As Dillman and others tried to promote.... Nonsense. Doesn't exist.

I always press slightly on the temporal pulse on the side of the head and massage very slowly.If you pay too much attention to the headache,you will cause more pain.Breathing always helps as well.
