The Getty is great. You just have to pay for parking, and they have all sorts of programs for kids.

You could go to Griffith Park - near the corner of Los Feliz and Riverside - and pay for a few pony rides - just a few $'s each ride.

Rollerblading / biking around the Rose Bowl is a nice family activity.

Kids like trains too - try a trip on the Gold line? Start from Union station, then get off in old Pasadena and do some window shopping - or hang out at a bookstore.

You could try Bright Child Children's Activity Center in Santa Monica is an indoor play area which is awesome. KidSpace Musuem in Pasadena. The Science Center in Los Angeles. Renting bikes, or skates at the beach. The Aquarium at the Santa Monica Pier. You could also try short nature walks, hiking in some of the Canyons.

I'm in the same boat as you. Take a look at gocitykids.com and LA Parent Magazine for more ideas.
