I would definitely try for the Academy. It is a worthwhile dream to chase, even if you don't succeed. I applied twice. I was not given an appointment the first time, and had one taken away due to a bad grade in my first year of college the second time. I learned many valuable lessons from the application process each time, though. It is definitely worth the try.
Another route you may want to consider is AFROTC at a college. As long as you had good grades/performance in the corps, you would have a good chance at becoming a pilot there as well. I know at Iowa State (my school) we have had most, if not all, of our applicants get pilot slots. You can apply for scholarships from that as well, and the process isn't much different than the academy process, so it isn't much more time consuming.
Either route is a worthwhile goal, but I would definitely go for it.

I am a service academy graduate. I did not go to the Air Force Academy, however, I am now a reserve Air Force officer and C-5 Galaxy instructor pilot. IM me and I will give you the lowdown on getting into a service academy, including the USAF Academy.

Good luck. You prettty much needed someone to nominate you to get in, like a general or congressman. Being a general's son can be of great help.
With force reshaping, it's even tougher to get in. You'd make more money being in than just getting some training and flying commercial anyway.
Besides, if you're not interested in actually serving your country, then go to a flight school and see what you can do.

The AF Academy is very difficult to get into. You need good grades and the recommendation of your congressman.
All graduates are taught and are capable of flying.
You do have to commit to active military service following graduation.

All military services have flight schools. Colorado Springs is tough to get into, you need great grades and letters of recomendation from Teachers, coaches, clergy etc. The good news is your state senator or congressman can get you a seat. You need to start writing to them and ask them to help you get in. Good luck.
