In other words, if you get your hopes up about something and then are disappointed it hurts more than if you would never have gotten your hopes up at all right? So is no hope better than false hope?

without hope, you may not want to live. False hope does carry us further but may come to a dead end which will be sad & tragic. However what you mention is more about expectations instead of hope.

The worst possible death is the end of hope.

Interesting related story - Pandora's Box. Some people say that a lack of hope is what escaped the box. Others that hope is what escaped the box. This shows how some feel hope can be a terrible thing and how others feel the exact opposite. It is up to you do decide if having a hope of better things balances the pain of not getting them.

Depends. There's a difference between hoping for a sunny day, and hoping that the universe is not ultimately a cold and meaningless void in which all human values are illusory.

I'd say neither hopelessness nor false hope are viable options. The only viable options are real hope or suicide. Camus knew that, to his credit.

Hmmm, interesting. I would not like to have no hope. I hope my son passes math. I hope they don't cut off my electricity. I hope that I am fulfilling the purpose that I came for this life. Sometimes, as in relationships hope that does not happen is very disappointing. It is not life shattering though. No, I want to have hope in my life.

Good morning, by the way.

If there is no hope then you commit suicide...

If there is no hope then you do not strive for anything at all you just stay there in your little corner and await your death if you are too cowardly for suicide.

I would rather have any hope (even if it is "false") and move forward with my life than no hope and just believe that life is indeed meaningless and in effect become useless to myself and others.

I think it really depends on the situation.

In a survival situation many times false hope is what keeps one going. This is turn allows one to survive. However when one loses all hope life usually ends fairly quickly.

Hopelessness is the worst. Having hope, a lot of times, saves you. Whatever the hope may be for.
You don't actually know the hope is false until it proves to be. Having the "hope" is what actually gives you the drive to go on and persevere.

No hope is better than false hope.

I could hope that I win the lottery tomorrow, and in the process put all of my faith in it and quit my job..

That is how I see religion.. They do a lot of crazy things in the name of faith and our country suffers as a result.

I don't think so. I always hope for the best, I just don't expect it. Hope and expectation are two different things, and when you expect the best, you tend to be disappointed.
